Resonance

“Resonance” emerges as an immersive convergence of art and technology, inviting viewers into a contemplative realm where the boundaries between the tangible and the ephemeral dissolve. Central to this installation is a calibrated mechanical speaker—a silent orchestrator inducing frequencies that animate a tranquil pool. Water, transformed into a transient canvas through strategically placed 3D-printed objects, mirrors unseen sonic compositions, creating a dynamic interplay of form and fluidity.

As waves propagate across the water's surface, a stroboscopic light, reminiscent of analog film motion picture shutters, freezes moments in time. This delicate choreography of sound, light, and water, meticulously orchestrated by a microcontroller, aligns with scientific rigor and cinematic cadence. Each element contributes to a symphony of senses, inviting viewers to explore the dynamic relationship between stillness and movement.

“Resonance” prompts contemplation on the intersection of scientific inquiry and artistic expression. The abstract images projected onto the gallery wall evoke suspended animation, a fleeting dance captured in a delicate interplay of shadows and reflections. It beckons viewers to navigate the liminal space between the tangible and the transient, where the boundaries of perception become fluid.

In considering the conceptual lineage, the influence of pioneering scientific photographer Bernice Abbott's work, particularly “Reflected Water Waves,” becomes evident in “Resonance.” This influence sets the tone for the exploration of beauty in the transient and the timeless—a choreography of ephemeral echoes. Abbott's legacy seamlessly harmonizes with contemporary echoes, including the immersive installations of Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, who masterfully merges technology and poetics, and Olafur Eliasson, whose exploratory spirit engages viewers with natural phenomena.

In “Resonance,” the convergence of influences paints a canvas of experiences—each ripple, each frozen moment, a brushstroke in a larger narrative. The installation stands as a testament to the perpetual dialogue between science and art, offering a nuanced exploration of the inherent beauty in the interplay of the transient and the timeless. As viewers immerse themselves in this symphony of senses, they become part of the choreography, invited to perceive, ponder, and resonate with the echoes of both past and present artistic expressions.

I have a perceptual phenomena called Grapheme–colour synesthesia where every number, even letters, seem to have a specific colour that they occupy in my mind.

I discovered this late in life assuming everyone had this vivid association. I began to use the associations cryptographically, using coloured marks to remember dates, secure pin numbers and passcodes. I eventually decided to build myself a clock, unhappy with the cliché of hands and numerical digits, one that only I could be expected to be able to read. The clock is equipped with a wifi connection referencing the network time protocol ensuring accuracy based on its current location. I’m inviting the viewer to reference the current time to patiently decode my colour mapping, and hopefully share in the beauty of times like 7:45, or 6:32 and the seconds between minutes.

Heliotrope

Sun-seeking solar trackers are simple, robust systems that rely solely on the sun’s intensity to position themselves for the most efficient energy collection, rather than using complex computer-aided control. By comparing light levels across a small set of sensors, they continuously adjust their orientation to face the strongest source. The logic is straightforward and effective, allowing the system to operate autonomously.

Heliotrope takes this principle as its basis. Sixteen ceiling-mounted light fixtures form a complete circle overhead, evenly spaced and aimed toward the center of the room. At any given moment, only one fixture is active, creating a single moving light source. Below, on a plinth, a small mechanical device constructed from soldered copper wire and exposed electronic components slowly pivots to face the active light. The transparency of the device reveals the simplicity of its operation.

The device uses differential light sensing to determine direction and is driven by a geared motor that prioritizes slow, deliberate movement. A small solar element recharges its internal battery, allowing the system to remain self-sustaining. When the light shifts, the device responds. When alignment is reached, it becomes still.

A horizontally mounted control wheel invites viewer interaction. Turning the wheel does not move the device directly, but instead changes which ceiling light is active, initiating a corresponding rotation of the device. The work emphasizes circular motion, feedback, and the relationship between movement and rest, drawing from traditions of kinetic and light-based practice found in the work of artists such as Rebecca Horn and Olafur Eliasson.
